DOT CHANGES RULES FOR EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ANIMALS
As of January 11, 2021 most airlines will no longer accept Emotional Support Animals in the same manner that they are required to accept Service dogs. Emotional Support Animals will now be considered as “pets” and subject to strict size limitations, carrier requirements, and pet fees.
Most airlines are allowing a grace period for travel with ESAs for tickets confirmed by January 10, 2021. Each airline has their own policy so it is best to check directly with them.
As of the moment (01/12/2021) SOUTHWEST AIRLINE is the only major airline that has not changed their ESA policy.
Effective immediately we will stop accepting requests for new assessments for ESA letters for Flying or Renewals of existing letters. If you plan to fly SOUTHWEST you may still apply for a new letter or renew and existing letter, with the understanding that there can be no assurance that SOUTHWEST will continue to accept ESAs.
We realize the this is a crushing blow to those who have come to depend the presence of their ESA to enable them to overcome their issues with flying and have been working hard to come up with a possible alternatives. We have already sent an email to our existing clients outlining this possible alternative. If you did not receive it, or are just interested in exploring and alternative to flying with an ESA you can find the information here
As of January 11 most major airlines will no longer accept ESAs for new bookings. Most are allowing passengers to complete flights with their ESAs if the reservations were booked and confirmed prior to January 11, 2021. The dates vary from airline to airline so it is best to check online.
To date only SOUTHWEST has not announced any change in their ESA policy.
